Don White from Toronto was eager to join the war effort. On his 18th birthday, he enlisted and trained as a reconnaissance soldier, learning to operate radios. He arrived in Italy in 1944 before advancing with his regiment to help liberate Belgium and the Netherlands.
Don endured months of brutal conditions, fighting the enemy from house to house. He also took part in the liberation of the Dutch town of Leeuwarden. After surviving the war, he dedicated himself to preserving and promoting Canadian military history.
In 2019, the Dutch Prime Minister christened a new tulip in his honor, paying tribute to White and his fellow Canadian soldiers who played a role in the liberation of the Netherlands.
