Caspar Sinnige
Fundraising Director 80 Years of Freedom Committee
I was born in Amsterdam and immigrated to Canada with my parents, who were liberated by Canadian soldiers in the spring of 1945. Thanks to those soldiers, my family was able to build a new life in Canada—one shaped by home, gratitude, and the enduring benefits of freedom.
Growing up, I heard countless stories of the war: the horrors, the hunger, and the hardships my parents and grandparents endured. But just as often, I heard about the kindness and courage of the Canadian troops who freed them. Now in their 90s, my parents are among the last of their generation. Having this opportunity to express our gratitude and to share these stories with the future generations who must carry these lessons forward while my parents are still with us is deeply meaningful for me.
These stories shaped the course of my life, instilling a deep belief in justice, accountability, and the responsibility to protect the rights and freedoms we so often take for granted. This foundation led me to a career in law, policy, and government affairs.
That is why I joined 80 Years of Freedom Committee —to honour the sacrifices that gave my family and so many others a future in Canada. I hope this project serves as a lasting reminder that freedom is never guaranteed. It must be cherished. It must be protected.
